I’ve spent a couple of months exploring the Louisiana marsh, living out of my camper, and chasing redfish every day I can get on the water. Between the wind, the tides, and miles of shallow ponds, figuring out where the fish will show up feels a lot like playing chess.

2022 BVFF Expo
This was the first year that Elevate Fly Fishing had a booth at the Western Idaho Fly Fishing expo. I gave two casting presentations about bamboo rods and an educational presentation about the history of cane rods and how they are made.

I hadn’t been to the Owyhee in a couple of months because I’d been busy rod building. A few people told me that that the fishing has been insane lately, and that is exactly how it turned out to be. Even better, when I arrived I was able to find a parking spot where I wanted to fish, which is it auspicious start to the day on the O!
Why Bamboo?
Split cane bamboo rods haven’t just been gathering dust since the 40s. The Western rivers in the United States presented new challenges to anglers and the classic bamboo rods weren't always the right tools for the job. The nearly constant wind, tumbling freestone pocket water, big rivers, and big fish pushed rod-makers to find ways to build rods that better suited these demands…
Winter Steel
Last week I had the opportunity to slip out of town with my parents/quarantine-fishing-buddies to spend four days on an a steelheading trip. My mom was happy to come on the trip but gave a hard pass to the idea of winter steelheading. I thought she was crazy and she thought I was too.
